This is my first picture book purchase in months, but it’s a good one!
I Want My Hat Back, by Jon Klassen is extremely simple and funny. I immediately thought of the humor and design of a Mo Willems book (and I have to admit to being rather tired of Mo Willems) but the illustrations make this book fresh and satisfying. Each character is simple in shape and color, yet their non-expressions, that vary with just a shift or widening of an eye, contribute to a rather hilarious ending.
Blizzards, ice storms and floods? I’ve been dreaming up warm, sunny beach scenes instead.
Here is a cropped version of Apollo and Lucia at the beach. Cropped because, as usual my scanner is too small for the paper I’ve been using. I had a few frustrating moments with this piece. I know I could improve the characters and there is a pretty big mistake in the water… we’ll see when I have time to try it again. This scene would take place before the Ocean mysteriously disappears, by the way.
And here is a photo of myself at the beach circa 1984. I hope everyone out there is staying safe and warm!
I’ve finally had a chance to catch up on some painting this weekend and I just completed the rabbit orchestra for Here We Go.
The landscape and colors in this piece is very much inspired by my love of (or obsession with) Iceland. Although it’s been six years since I traveled there, it’s the sort of place that isn’t easily forgotten.
